The Sheep and The Shepherd

A shepherd’s job is simple but important. A good shepherd leads the sheep to green grass and clean water. The sheep do not know the way by themselves, so they must listen and follow. When the sheep obey, they are safe and well fed.
The Bible tells us, “The Lord is my Shepherd; I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters” (Psalm 23:1–2). God is the Shepherd, and we are the sheep.

Now let’s look at our own lives as Christians. Who is leading, and who is following? Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). That means we are meant to listen to Jesus and walk the way He shows us.

I remember a song we used to sing: “Shepherd of my soul, I’ll give You full control, wherever You may lead, I will follow.” It sounds beautiful, but do we really mean it? Giving God full control is not just singing the words. It means trusting Him even when we don’t understand.

Giving Him full control is like waiting at a traffic light. You don’t move when the light is red, even if the road looks empty. You move only when it turns green. Obedience works the same way. We don’t rush ahead. We wait for God’s direction and follow it.
Proverbs 3:5–6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart… and He will make your paths straight.” When we let the Shepherd lead, He always takes us to the right place.

Today, pause and ask yourself a simple question: Who is leading my life right now—me or God?
Jesus is still calling, just like He did long ago, “Follow Me” (Matthew 4:19).

Surrender does not mean losing your life; it means placing it in safe hands. It means saying, “God, I trust You more than my own understanding. I will wait when You say wait, and I will move when You say go.” Like a sheep listening for the shepherd’s voice, choose to follow even when the path is unfamiliar.

Take a quiet moment today and pray this from your heart:
“Lord, You are my Shepherd. I surrender control to You. Lead me, and I will follow.”
Then walk it out, listen, obey, and trust. The green pastures are always found where the Shepherd leads.
