Lately, I’ve been thinking about how quick we are to reach for our phones whenever something goes wrong. A bad dream, a sudden worry, or a difficult moment and our first thought is, “Let me call my pastor.”
But what if we paused for a moment before making that call? What if we reminded ourselves that pastors are human too: fragile, emotional, and sometimes weary?
We often forget that behind the pulpit and the powerful prayers is a person who also gets discouraged, who sometimes cries in silence, and who longs for uninterrupted rest. Many pastors today are emotionally stretched because they are constantly pouring out to people who rarely stop to ask, “Pastor, how are you?”
We’ve become so used to their strength that we forget they also need care. They pray for everyone, yet few pray for them. They encourage others, but sometimes no one encourages them back. And while they answer every call for help, some of those calls could have been directed first to God.
This isn’t a call to neglect our pastors, it’s a reminder to honour their humanity. Let’s give them the grace to rest without guilt, to say “no” without judgment, and to recharge without apology.
Before you pick up that phone, talk to God first. He is never too busy to listen. And when you do reach out to your pastor, let it not always be for help, sometimes, let it be to simply say, “Thank you. Please take care of yourself.”
