Someone Is Always Watching

In 2019, I had an experience that made me realize just how much people observe our actions, even when we don’t think anyone is paying attention. It reminded me of the importance of being intentional in how we live and treat others.

That year, I started working in a new area and took the same route every day. At first, it felt strange walking past the same people without acknowledging them, so I decided to make an effort. I smiled, greeted them, and checked in on the elderly along my path. Over time, this small gesture became a routine. If they didn’t see me, they would ask after me, and I did the same for them. It was a simple act, but it built a sense of community.

One day, a friend sent me a screenshot of a comment about me from someone I didn’t even know. They had noticed me at an event where I was a guest. Instead of sitting still, I had been up and about, helping where I could. Their words were heartwarming, but it also made me think—what if I had been rude or dismissive? It was a reminder that people are always watching, even when we least expect it.

Another time, a Muslim woman stopped me on the street to thank me and even prayed for me. She had heard that I helped an elderly lady carry her groceries home—her grandmother. To me, it was a small gesture, but to her, it meant everything.

Then, a man from the community approached me and said he had been observing me and had heard a lot about me from his neighbors. Curious, I asked what they were saying. It turned out to be all positive comments, which encouraged me. Without realizing it, I had become a topic of discussion simply by being myself.

This experience taught me that our lives are like open books, constantly being read by those around us. We never know who is watching or how our actions might impact someone else. A simple act of kindness, a smile, a helping hand—these things matter.

So, I encourage you today:

Be intentional about how you live.

Choose kindness even when no one seems to notice.

Remember that your actions speak louder than words.

Someone is always watching. Make sure they see something worth remembering.
